our tour guide will meet you at the hotel to start the city tour. The first attraction will be the Egyptian museum.This museum (opened in 1901) has the largest collection of artifacts in the world.The visit to this museum is a must, with your guide, you will find yourself diving in a sea of 165,000 artifacts and antiquities.Your guide will explain and show you the highlights and most important of all.The treasures of the young pharaoh Tut Ankh Amun,his golden mask and coffins and the contents of his intact tomb are among the most important of all.You will enjoy looking at the fantastic sculptures, sarcophagi, jewelry and papyrus scrolls that date back to different eras.You will have the chance to see the royal mummies of the great pharaohs (optional).You can have free time to browse the museum yourself after the guided part.
After the impressive visit to the museum, you will be taken to The Citadel of Saladin. This fort was built in 1173 to protect the city of Cairo against the Crusaders. The walls and towers of the citadel are still in place. A lot of structures were built inside the citadel but the main attraction is the alabaster mosque or Mohamed Ali mosque. Mohamed Ali {1805-1849] ordered to build this magnificent mosque which is similar to the design of the blue mosque in Istanbul. Accompanied by your guide, you will learn about the basic elements of the mosque and the main principles of the Islamic religion.Both the mosque and the citadel were built on an elevated hill,so you have a great chance to have a wonderful view over the city including the old and the modern parts.
Christianity in Egypt is as old as Christianity itself.In Coptic Cairo,you will visit old and beautiful churches that are witnesses for the Coptic history. The hanging church, 1500 years old, is situated above one of the towers of the Babylon fortress.It is one of the most beautiful churches in Cairo.Then have a look at the cave where Mary the virgin and Jesus the Christ took shelter from Herod.The church of St Sergious (Abu Serga) was built on top of the cave to commemorate this great incident.Finally,feel the religious tolerance in Egypt by visiting Ben Ezra synagogue, the oldest Jewish temple in Cairo.You will learn there about the history of the Jewish community in Egypt.At the end of the tour you will be taken back to the hotel.
