This mummy retains the panel inserted over the face.
The portrait depicts a youth with large deep-set eyes
and a down-turned mouth. His downy moustache
indicates that he is no older than his early twenties.
A number of mummy portraits represent youths with
their first facial hair, a feature that had particular
connotations in the Greek-educated society of Roman
Egypt. The incipient moustache was both an indicator
of the young man's entrance into important social
groups and a signal that he was at the prime of sexual
attractiveness and vigor.

In this era mummies might be kept above ground for
periods of some months up to several years before
final burial. Most probably they were deposited
in chapels in cemeteries, where they were visited by
relatives for ritual meals.Fayoum mummy portraits

Product Description

Al-Fayoum Oasis is a depression or basin in the desert immediately to the west of the Nile south of Cairo. The extent of the basin area is estimated at between 1,270 km² (490 mi²) and 1700 km² (656 mi²). The basin floor comprises fields watered by a channel of the Nile, the Bahr Yussef.Al Fayoum has a very rich history especially during the Roman period as in the first three centuries AD, the people of Al Fayoum and elsewhere in Roman Egypt not only embalmed their dead but also placed a portrait of the deceased over the face of the mummy wrappings, shroud or case. The Egyptians continued their practice of burying their dead, despite the Roman preference for cremation. Preserved by the dry desert environment, these Fayoum portraits make up the richest body of portraiture to have survived from antiquity. They provide us with a window into a remarkable society of peoples of mixed origins such as Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Syrians, Libyans and others — that flourished 2,000 years ago in Al Fayoum. The Fayoum portraits were painted on wood in a pigmented wax technique called encaustic. The day tour to Al Fayoum will provide you with relaxation and beautiful landscape.
After meeting your guide at the hotel, you will drive for 75 minutes to get there. You will visit the museum of Karanis and the ruins of the Roman temples on the road.Drive through the fertile fields and the farmlands as you get closer to Al Fayoum villages.Enjoy the fresh air in Qarun Lake which was one of the biggest natural lakes in the world, but now it covers an area of 200 square kilometers of saltwater.Enjoy the beautiful landscape around the lake.
